Track historical residential electricity and natural gas costs by utility
Understand how residential energy costs have changed over time using utility-specific historical data. RateAcuity applies published utility tariffs to government-reported average residential usage to calculate monthly modeled costs and unit rates for financial research, energy market analysis, and economic modeling.
Make historical rate changes easier to analyze
Published residential tariffs differ across utilities, rate schedules and time. RateAcuity converts those structures into monthly modeled residential cost histories, helping analysts monitor rate movements, compare trends, and incorporate utility cost changes into their own research models.
Two separately purchasable reports
Residential Electric Average Rate Report
Modeled monthly residential electricity service cost and cost per kWh, by utility and schedule.
Residential Natural Gas Average Rate Report
Modeled monthly residential natural gas service cost and cost per CCF, by utility and schedule.
How modeled costs are calculated
Average usage
RateAcuity starts with published average residential usage by state.
Applicable tariff
Analysts apply the utility tariff rates in effect for the reporting month.
Monthly cost and unit cost
Each month gets a modeled total cost, plus cost per kWh (electric) or per CCF (gas).
Modeled service cost based on published tariffs and representative usage. Not an individual customer bill or an official price index.

What is and isn't included
Is this the average bill a specific utility customer actually paid?
No. It is a modeled monthly cost based on published rate schedules and state-level average residential usage.
Do the electric and gas reports contain the same units?
No. The electric report provides cost per kWh; the gas report provides cost per CCF. Both include a modeled total monthly cost.
Can we buy only one report?
Yes. The residential electric and natural gas reports are purchased separately.
How far back does history go?
The current electric sample covers January 2019 through September 2026 and the gas sample covers January 2022 through April 2026. Ask us to confirm the history and utility coverage for your research.
